COACH Spring 2027 SHOW NOTES

After fifteen years of making LOVEWANT, I know anniversaries are strange. You start by counting years and end up counting the ideas that have ultimately stayed with you. Stuart Vevers put it better in his notes for Coach’s 85th: “Memory isn’t fixed. It changes as we live with it.”

Vevers kept returning to things that had been lived with. Nappa leather softened. Jersey was sun faded. Bias dresses arrived in repurposed lining fabric and sequins. The Brooklyn bag was reversed. Vintage Coach pouches were assembled into a new Tabby. The new Turnlock Tote looked back to Bonnie Cashin’s 1970 design without behaving like an archive piece. Nothing was protected from use.

This is to coin a phrase, worn-in romance , we call it the after-party Americana. while pointing to the useful tension in the show. This vocabulary is now recognisably Vevers, which makes the next move harder. The long line and distressed surface have become signatures. The slouch is nearly one too. Repetition can become identity or habit depending on what happens next. Then the birthday broke through. Metallic foil rubbed into leather. Party hats sat crooked on heads. Confetti caught in bags and shoes. Curtains opened onto UpBeat NYC strings and eight voguing dancers as MFSB’s “Love Is the Message” took over the room. LOVE!!

I liked that the celebration came late. By then the clothes had already made their argument. A thing can be repaired and passed on. Turn it inside out and it still belongs to the future.
